I took Scotty, my 1976 vintage camper, up to Ohio this past weekend to K T Rv Repair and Vintage Restoration to have some work done. Here’s a video of the “before”…
It was only a two day trip but I managed to squeeze a good number of things in.
I started my trip on a sad note, at the funeral of an acquaintance. Pam was a person that I wish I had gotten to know better- she was the wife of my dentist (who also happened to officiate at my daughter’s wedding in April- he is a minister as well) and also the victim of an unfortunate biting incident a while back…
In the eulogy and comments by her friends, they all said that Pam was a really positive person who didn’t like to talk about herself much, but instead liked to hear about what others were doing. She always looked on the bright side and was an amazing person and good friend. I spent a lot of time on the trip thinking about her and wishing I had done more to get to know her better. Life goes by so quickly- when you get down to it, our relationships are what we should be treasuring and investing time in… in the grand scheme, nothing else is as important.
One kind of funny thing happened at the funeral though, and I think Pam probably would have gotten a chuckle… I waited to leave thinking that I would let the funeral procession go ahead. I was driving Big Daddy with Scotty in tow. I entered my next destination into the GPS, got myself a drink for the road, checked my email and decided to go. I got to the road and saw that the funeral procession was just leaving and that we were going to be part of it! And I was six cars behind the hearse! I felt somehow disrespectful towing this happy little camper in the middle of sober black vehicles but could not figure out how to get out of it… so I put on my lights and stayed with the group for a few miles. However they were going only about 25 MPH- with 330 miles to go, I had to pull out of line and pass everyone. So I said a farewell to Pam and was on my way… I am sure she is spreading her light on the next phase of her journey…
I drove on up through Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania… stopping in PA for lunch and a trip to Mr. Hardware. The store had this really pretty glider sitting out front but it was not for sale plus it wouldn’t fit in the camper, but that didn’t stop me from wishing I could have it!
I finally got to the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Re-Use at about 4 PM. And oh what a treat it was! I shopped for two hours, and came out with some really cool treasures.
The store closed at six so I checked out and continued on to the Scrapbook Super Station. It was a little out of the way but very worthwhile. The classroom in the store is the biggest I have seen in all of my travels, allowing for 40 students! I shopped (found some really fun things and most of it was on sale!) and then introduced myself to Amy, the owner. We had a nice chat and it looks like I will be teaching there when I come back through to pick up Scotty! Here’s a picture of Amy and her team- they all do amazing work and I was fortunate enough to see some of their upcoming classes which are fantastic.
I found a great deal on Priceline while eating a Big Bowl at KFC (it was one of those nights- cold, snowy and I just needed some potatoes). The roads were not the best but I arrived at the Park Inn by Raddison in Beaver Falls, PA and spent a lovely few hours watching Criminal Minds reruns.
In the morning I got up and departed for Mantua OH where Scotty was to be fixed. After meeting Kevin and Tammy, I left feeling like Scotty was in good hands. I can’t wait to see how much better he will be when I get him back!
Then I left for home. I was honored to have phone chats with the amazing Jo Packham and Sandi Genovese as I drove. Sandi posts a great video project every week- head on over to her site to check them out!
I also stopped in Pat Catan’s Arts and Crafts to browse- there aren’t any close to me so whenever I am out that way I feel like I need to see what they have. It’s research!
I arrived home at 10:30 PM, safe and sound, thankfully. Life on the road is exciting but there’s no place like home…

Can’t wait to see the “after” pictures. It will be so nice you’ll have to have an “open house” 🙂

So sorry to hear about the death of you friend, but I think she would have enjoyed knowing you and Scotty were in the procession – it sounds like she was a remarkable lady.
It will be lovely to see Scotty fully repaired! I must remember, the next time I visit a craft store, it is not to spend money, but simply research! I love that. It is a good job that here in the UK, craft stores are few and far between …. Hugs, Anne xx

Thanks Anne for your kind comment! I do think Pam would enjoyed having Scotty along for her final drive… And I confess I did do the research… and then I bought! 🙂 just doing my part to keep the stores in business!

Thanks for sharing your story about your trailer repair. It’s amazing to me how many stories we can get by just a simple trip to get a camper repaired. Like you say, it was only a two day trip, but you managed to squeeze a lot of adventures in!
