Each month a member of Eileen Hull’s Inspiration Team has been asked to share a technique post for our “Make it Monthly” Blog series. For the month of March we have Julia Aston sharing a Faux Gilding technique project. Julia’s Faux Gilded Sizzix Flowers with 3-D Vase features a bunch of Eileen Hull Sizzix Dies, Wendy Vecchi Archival Inks, and the Twist and Style Tool.
Faux Gilded Sizzix Flowers with 3-D Vase
I started by die cutting Eileen’s 3D Vase die out of white matboard. I also cut out two of the tools from her Thinlets Gardening Tools die out of white cardstock.
So the Faux Gilding Technique (that I learned from Wendy Vecchi on YouTube here) is created by rubbing a small amount of WV Metallic Gold Embossing Paste over the piece you are working on, leaving a lot of the white space clear. Let it dry completely – this only takes a few minutes.
Then you sponge over the piece with an Archival Ink. I wasn’t sure what color I wanted to use with the gold paste so I tried 3 different ones – WV Archival Potting Soil, WV Archival Watering Can and WV Archival Cornflower Blue – here are the results.
I really liked all of the colors I tried – but decided to go with Watering Can for the vase and tools, using Potting Soil on the handles
I love how the tools came out!
I stamped a script background over the vase using Watering Can Ink.
I used Eileen’s Romance Flower and Spring Leaves dies to make flowers for the vase using the same process of rubbing on the embossing paste and then sponging.
I wanted a brighter color for the flowers and leaves so the flowers are sponged with Orange Blossom and the leaves with Leaf Green. I then sponged the edges with Watering Can.
I spritzed the back of the flowers with water, crunched them up and let them dry.
I opened up the layers and made two blooms – I didn’t use the largest layer on the 2nd flower.
I put the flower together with a long brass brad. I made the stem with Eileen’s Twist N Style tool.
I put the loop on the end of the twisted stem through the brad on the back of the flower.
I covered the brad with the 2nd layer of the largest petal.
I made the wire long enough to fold in half and put the smaller flower on the other end.
I stuck the base of the stem into some floral foam to hold it, placed that in the vase and covered it with brown basket shred.
I adhered the tools and sentiment strip with an Idea-ology Hitch Fastener.
The sentiment is from All Occasions Art by Wendy Vecchi.
I love the shimmer the gold embossing paste gives to the flowers.
This would make a lovely gift for a gardening friend don’t you think?! Thanks for checking out my Make it Monthly technique Tutorial. Hope you enjoyed my Faux Gilded Sizzix Flowers. Stop by my Blog for more creative inspiration.
